After School Program's 2006 – 2007

 

 

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:  The After School Program at the Mary Mitchell Center is a club-based program.  That means students sign up for activities of interest to them and appropriate for their age level.  We have six clubs, all of which include activities to strengthen literacy skills as well as instruction in the following areas:

 

 JUJITSU CLUB Jujitsu is a form of martial arts.  Classes meet Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays for 25 students per day ages 7-12.  Students learn the basics and then progress through a belt system.  Students must provide their own uniform.  The instructor can order it for you.  They put on several exhibitions thru out the year.

   

DANCE CLUB Classes meet twice a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for ages 7-12. 20 Students will learn dancing skills.  They perform at special events thru out the year.

   

LITERACY CLUB The Literacy Club is Mandatory for everyone registers in the After School Program which means that each participant gets the chance to participate in the literacy project of the week. The class runs from Monday thru Thursday. Participants use library/literacy skills in a hands-on exploration of resources such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases, almanacs, nonfiction books, travel guides, brochures, on-line websites, and videos, to synthesize information.

   

SPORT CLUB Classes meet two days a week, Monday through Thursday 25 students for ages 7-12. Learn basic skills in Basketball, Football and many others physics skills.

  

ART & CRAFT CLUB Classes meet Monday thru Thursday for 30 students for ages 7-12.  They learn to use paint, craypas, pencils and other medium.

 

 

HOME ECONOMIC CLUB Classes meet Monday and Wednesday 24 students for ages 7-12.  They will learn personal hygiene and the basic on how to help the family throughout cleaning and simple cooking

  

The program day is structured as follows:

 

 THE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM IS OPEN ON FRIDAYS FOR WORKING PARENT’S ONLY.

3:00pm to 3:30 pm - Students arrive and Supper Time

3:30pm to 4:00pm  - Students have time to do their homework.  (We do not have sufficient staff to insure that all homework is completed and correct.  It is VERY IMPORTANT that the parent or guardian check the student’s homework every night.)

4:00pm to 5:40pm  - Students are involved in the club activities.

5:45pm to Dismissal-Outdoor Activity 

6:00pm - Dismissal*

  

* The Center must have on file the names of people who will pick-up children or parental consent for a child to walk home him or herself.  If a child must regularly wait for more than 15 minutes to be picked-up, the parent must make other arrangements or the child may be taken out of the program.

  

PROGRAM DATES:   The After School Program follows the same schedule as the Public School.  When there is no school or half-a-day there is no after school program.

 

CLOSINGS The after school program is closed when the public schools are closed (including half days and teacher training days).  If the weather is bad (i.e. heavy snow or rain) the program may be cancelled even if the schools are open. We will call you if the program is cancelled but if you are hard to reach please call us if the weather is inclement.
