Attendance Policy

 Due to the overwhelming response of the after school program, the following measures have been put into place to ensure that every child gets a fair opportunity to attend. Participants in the program are required to have at least a 75% attendance rate. If your child is absent more than 2 days in a week, you will receive a telephone call and written letter notifying you of the first occurrence and asking whether or not you’d like to modify his or her schedule.  If the schedule is not modified, and the absences occur a second time, you will receive a 2^nd warning letter, the third occurrence will result in your child losing his or her seat to a child in the waiting list.  Exceptions are made for doctor’s appointments with documentation and or family vacation with notification.  If a child is schedule to attend on Fridays, the parent/guardian must provide work/school documentation.  Fridays are subject to capacity and Program Director’s approval.

Discipline Policy

Our Discipline Approach

Here at the Mary Mitchell after School Program, we believe that youth continuously be encouraged. This means, we subscribe to positive discipline approach which means positive behaviors are encouraged, recognized and rewarded. We do not believe in punishing youth.  We believe in teaching youth responsible behavior and showing them that their actions have consequences are choices determined by actions.  Our goal with youth is to enable them to manage themselves responsibility reinforce this through positive recognition and consistent structure.  In the after school program, youth are taught to think before they act and to resolve conflicts peacefully.  This is reflective of our culture as a whole, and as we progress our youth will be examples of this ideology.  Our disciplinary approach is aimed at modifying behaviors yet we do not do so at the cost of a child’s self esteem.  We do not demean disparage or disrespect children in any manner as this is in direct opposition to our culture and community.  We are very careful with the young minds and spirits that have been entrusted to us.  Will your child be disciplined?  Yes. How so? In a firm yet caring manner, he or she will receive consequences based on the actions he or she chooses. The tools of success were created by the children and adults and are discussed immediately and over time. These tools are guidelines that the youth and adults follow in order to maintain a peaceful, nurturing and safe environment for all. The tools define what is and isn’t appropriate and consequences related to such action.

The Mary Mitchell ASP committed to providing a safe, caring and respectful environment for participants and staff.  Every parent, child or family member representing a child must adhere to the following guidelines:

1.      Everyone must enter the center building after 3:00 pm.

2.      Everyone must enter in an orderly fashion – yelling, running, pushing or shoving is strictly prohibited.

3.      Foul and offensive language is absolutely prohibited.

4.      If school uniforms are mandatory in a child’s assigned school, they must be worn to after school.

5.      Fighting is ABSOLUTELY PROHIBITED.

6.     Bullying and Teasing are ABSOLUTELY PROHIBITED.

7.      Everyone is to be respectful of one another.

The following consequences will be imposed on ANYONE who does not follow the guidelines

·       Fighting is grounds for immediate expulsion.

·       Bullying/Teasing 1^st Offense = the participants will get 20 minutes to revise our discipline approach public, apology and acknowledgment.

·       2^nd Offense = public apology and acknowledgment, restriction of activity (for a least two sections).

·       3^rd offense is grounds for explosion from the program.

·       Foul, offensive language and disrespectful conduct = 25 minutes to reflect of his or her action and to give a written apology / restriction and repeat offense could lead to vacations and / expulsion.

·       Repeat offense or disregard to any of the guidelines could lead to a child losing his

      Or her space in the program.

Field Trips in General:

Field trips serve as an educational purpose and their value should be an integral part of the program’s instructional activity.            Field trips are privileges given to participants; no participant has a right to a field trip. A field trip needs a written official permission slip. Signed by the parents, is required before a child will be permitted to attend a field trip. Verbal or faxed permission cannot be accepted.

Fundraising Activities:

Each family must participate in any of our after school events (parents help will be really appreciate by the participants and the center)

·       Halloween party

·       Thanksgiving Dinner

·       Christmas Event

·       Valentine Dance

·       Spelling BEE

·       Egg Hunt

·       Children’s Art Show

·       Talent Show

·       Fit & Fun Event

·       Fashion Show

·       Last Day Of ASP Event

Fire Drills:   Fire drills at regular intervals are required by the law and are an important safety tool. It is important that when the fire signal is given, everyone obeys promptly and clears the center by prescribed route as quickly as possible.  Participants should not be talking during the fire drill and remain outside the building until a signal is given to return to the building.   The club instructors will direct the participants.

Change of Information:  The office must be informed immediately if there is a change of home address or telephone number for the purpose of mailing or emergency.

Child’s Appearance:  Personal hygiene routines are followed daily by the home economic instructor   (Ms. Yolanda Jacobo) for example:

·       Participants will be instructed in the use of deodorant (when appropriate)

·       Cloth should be neat and clean

·       Hair should be clean and groomed

·       Participants will be instructed in personal hygiene by the Home Economic Club

If after trying all of the above with the participant comes consistently in an unkempt manner parents will be inform.

Note:

Electronic Devices: are prohibited to be carried by the participants in the program

Policy Against Harassment

Everyone at The Mary Mitchell Family and Youth Center has a right to feel respected and safe.

We prohibit harassment based upon an individual’s race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or any other basis protected by law.  Harassment whether verbal, physical, or environmental, is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Harassing activity can include:

·        Name calling, “jokes,” or slurs that relate to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age or disability;

·        Threatening, intimidating, or hostile acts that relate to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, or disability;

·        Graffiti, notes, cartoons, posters, or other graphic material displayed or circulated that denigrate or show hostility or aversion towards an individual or group because of race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, or disability;

·        Unwelcome touching, pinching, grabbing, pulling on clothing, or other sexually-motivated physical contact;

·        Spreading rumors about a student’s sexual activity or performance;

·        Unwelcome or coerced sexual advances or sexual acts.

If you feel that you may have been harassed by a staff member, another student, or someone else involved in one of our activities or events, or if words or actions like those described above have made you feel uncomfortable or unwilling to participate in a program or activity, please tell your instructor, Lurgen Luna, Program Director or Heidi Hynes, Executive Director about the incident.

You may also wish to complete a form describing the incident.  The form is available at the Mary Mitchell Family & Youth Center and should be given to your instructor or Lurgen Luna Program Directors or Heidi Hynes, Executive Director.

We take seriously all reports of harassment. We will investigate and take appropriate actions based on your report.  We will also respond if anyone tries to intimidate you or harm you because you have made a report.

STAFF:  Our staff members are all qualified instructors in their program areas.  They provide the students will excellent training in their areas of expertise.                                              The Executive Director is Heidi Hynes.

PARENT / GUARDIAN INVOLVEMENT:  We ask that every parent and guardian assist us in providing an excellent after school program.  Your role as program assistant, fundraiser and evaluator is essential to the success of our program.  We have regular meetings with parents to discuss the program and schedule parent/guardian participation.  It is mandatory that you attend the orientation and Provide feedback to the staff about the program.

For parents and guardians

Continues tardiness in picking up your child can be cause for the child to be suspended or expelled from the program.  Also continued rude or disrespectful behavior from parents or guardians toward staff or other people involved in the program can be cause for your child to be suspended or expelled from the program.

Supper

The After School Program provides a hot meal through the New York City Health Department. The meal is free for the participants.  Meal is base on four component: Milk, fluid – Vegetables/fruit – Grains/breads – Meat/meat alternate.

ILLNESS AND MEDICATION:  Our registration material includes a doctor’s consent form and documentation of shots.  We must also know if your child is on any medication.  Please notify the program coordinator when your child is on medication.  If your child becomes ill during the program hours the parent or guardian will be called to pick-up the child.  In case of emergency the child will be taken to the hospital.  Parental consent is part of the registration material.  Any small incident requiring first aid will be brought to the parent’s attention through a letter sent home with the child.

FUNDING:  The after school program is funded entirely by private and corporate sponsors that support the work that we do.  Part of the money comes through the donations of neighborhood people, businesses & parents. The more money we can raise the more programs & better supplies we will have for the children.  PLEASE JOIN OUR FUNDRAISING EFFORTS.
