Salutes
the Mary Mitchell Center and their honorees
Lurgen Luna, INHOC and Bajraktari Realty
In 1997, when the
Mary Mitchell Center opened it was a risk.
Astin Jacobo and the other board members did not the have money to run
programs and they did not have experience running a community center but they
did have a vision, they knew a lot of people and they had a serious commitment
to the Crotona neighborhood. Borough
President Fernando Ferrer and Councilman Jose Rivera funded the construction of
the Center because they understood that “people power” is the most influential
force in any community. From the first
day INHOC made regular contributions to the Center and many individuals and
community organizations helped the Center to stay open. That first year Lurgen Luna started a youth
program and she managed the use of the Center by over 25 community groups.
The Northwest Bronx Community & Clergy
Coalition’s support began before the building was built. They helped the board to incorporate,
provided organizing staff and then, once the building opened, wrote a grant for
the board allowing them to hire a director.
That initial grant from the New York Foundation and the board and staff
training that came with it gave us the tools to build our capacity and grow our
programs.
Congressman Serrano began funding the Center at
a critical time when we began a partnership with the Department of
Education. Funding from him, Councilman
Joel Rivera, Assemblyman Michael Benjamin, the Pinkerton Foundation, the
Laureus Sports for Good Foundation and many others including local businesses
like Bajraktari Management Corp. has allowed us to hire a great staff and
expand our programs in keeping with our mission to improve the lives of
families and youth in the Crotona section of the Bronx through programs that
expand opportunities, develop leadership and build community.
As we mark this important milestone, I am
deeply thankful for all
the board, staff, volunteers, group leaders and funders who have made the
Center such a great place to be. I look
forward to the next 10 yeas of working together

Congratulations on your 10th Anniversary!
It is wonderful to see how the Center has grown over the
years. While we miss Astin Jacobo,
your founding Board President and member of our Board, we look forward to helping
you create the Astin Jacobo Center over the next ten years in his honor.
